1. Leaving enough time

You might have heard this one before, but it’s true. Finding a cost-effective and reliable moving company, organising the stuff in the attic/garage/shed and putting a whole house into boxes takes a lot of time. De-cluttering can be done well in advance – go to the dump, donate it to charity or sell it online. There’s no point in packing stuff you don’t even want.

2. Changing your address

It’s easy to for it to slip your mind, but you’ll be kicking yourself when that important piece of post doesn’t arrive. About two weeks before the move, arrange for your post to be forwarded, register your change of address with companies (especially the bank!), and tell family and friends.

3. Getting insurance

Other useful items are a torch, a first-aid kit, and Ziploc bags.

9. Making the beds
